For the first time in 2022, Tennessee basketball takes the court after a week off. It will be the home opener in the SEC for Rick Barnes’ team in addition to their opener of the new year, and it will also be an interesting test for them.

Ranked No. 18 in both polls, Rocky Top welcomes the Ole Miss Rebels to town. UT is coming off a close loss on the road last week to the Alabama Crimson Tide in which it did not have John Fulkerson or Kennedy Chandler out there.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss hasn’t played since Dec. 21, when it lost at home 75-73 to the Samford Bulldogs. Their most recently schedule game was Tuesday, Dec. 29 against the Florida Gators, but it was called off due to COVID protocols. Despite a bad loss to Samford, Ole Miss has been an up and down team under Davis. They did beat the Memphis Tigers and Dayton Flyers, but they lost to the Boise State Broncos and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Their other loss was to the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Having to replace two of their three leading scorers from last year’s team that went 16-12 and was eliminated in the first round of the NIT has proven costly, but Daeshun Ruffin being back from injury should help with that going forward. They are still dangerous.

On the other side, the Vols have no reason to worry about their road loss to Alabama last week without their two best players. The week before, they scored a huge top 10 win over the Arizona Wildcats, and they will have plenty of chances to add to their resume.

Prediction

Davis’ matchup zone has historically posed problems for Barnes, and it will limit what Chandler can do in their return. However, Fulkerson and Olivier Nkamhoua should be able to dominate in the paint on second-chance points, and this team shoots the three better than other UT teams.

This is a shot in the dark, but Tennessee basketball will be on shooting from outside in this game. As a result, the Vols will make it rain. Three-point shooting will carry them to a dominant victory, allowing them to cover and their offense to hit the over. Take Tennessee -17 and the Over 134.5. The score will look something like this: Tennessee 91 Ole Miss 70.
