Offensive Player of the Year/Most Valuable Player: Hendon Hooker

Given all the changes and transfers this past offseason, there was consideration to add Newcomer of the Year to this list, not just Rookie of the Year. However, Hendon Hooker would have won that as well, meaning he would have racked up three of the seven awards that would have been out there.

Hooker was clearly Tennessee football’s best offensive player of the year and their MVP. The Virginia Tech Hokies transfer started the year as the backup quarterback to Joe Milton III but came in after Milton got hurt against the Pittsburgh Panthers. He never lost his job.

A true dual-threat who ran Josh Heupel’s offense to perfection, Hooker completed 206 of 302 passes (68.2 percent) for 2,945 yards (9.8 yards per attempt), 31 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also carried the ball 167 times for 620 yards (3.7 yards per attempt) and five touchdowns, an amazing stat line when you consider how often he got sacked.

Very few quarterbacks in history have been as productive as Hooker was this year, especially Tennessee football history. The 6’4″ 218-pound senior won everybody on Rocky Top over even more when he announced he would come back for 2022, as will Cedric Tillman. That should make for a dominant passing game given the fact that both guys made this list.
