Tennessee football: Ranking former Vols in 2021-22 NFL Playoffs

Another theme of Tennessee football players in the pros is guys who were grossly under-utilized by their coaches in college, particularly the Butch Jones years. Jakob Johnson never played more than five games a season at UT from 2014 to 2017, and he only played two games his senior season before, like Kendal Vickers, going undrafted.
It took shining in the German Football League in 2018 to get noticed, and he signed with the New England Patriots in 2019. Over the past two years, Johnson has turned into a solid rotational player at tight end for them. This year, he had five catches for 43 yards.
Johnson is mostly a blocking tight end and serves as a unique weapon in the complex offense that New England is known to run. Still, he’s largely the backup tight end, so he won’t be able to have the same impact that he may have had last year, when he was the primary starter.
As a result, like Vickers, we have to keep Johnson low on this list. He’s actually a throwback because he’s listed as a fullback on the Pats’ roster. Look for Johnson to be key on running plays as a blocker, although New England does visit the Buffalo Bills Saturday night, against whom he had his most recent catch.
