Trey Smith going to the NFL, Brandon Kennedy graduating and Wanya Morris and Jahmir Johnson transferring made it natural that Tennessee football would have new breakout offensive lineman. Cade Mays, Darnell Wright and Jerome Carvin were the only three returning starters/major contributors, and they all moved to different positions.

Javontez Spraggins, Dayne Davis, Ollie Lane, Kingston Harris and Cooper Mays all took a huge leap forward. Harris played only one game in 2020. However, his leap wasn’t big enough in 2021, as he only played 107 snaps. Mays became the starting center, but he did play in every game in 2020 and started two while missing time in 2021 due to injury, so he also didn’t have a big leap.

Davis and Lane didn’t even play in 2020, but they both had multiple starts in 2021 and played over 300 snaps. However, their production wasn’t up to where it needed to be. That leaves Spraggins, who took by far the biggest step forward and burst onto the scene.

Last year, Spraggins played in eight games. He did have a start, but it was as a jumbo package tight end. This year, he and Mays were the only starters of everybody we mentioned. Spraggins manned the right guard spot and had a PFF regular season grade of 61.8. He also played the second most snaps on the line behind Wright. As a result, he was the top lineman to break out.
