Previous school: Texas Longhorns

Let’s recap what happened to Tennessee football at linebacker last year. Henry To’o To’o transferred to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Quavaris Crouch transferred to the Michigan State Spartans, J.J. Peterson entered the transfer portal and Martavius French and prized recruit Aaron Willis got suspended during spring practice. French then transferred as well.

Obviously, the Vols had a ton of needs at the position, and while William Mohan was there for depth, Juwan Mitchell was lured away from Austin to be an immediate contributor. After all, he had 62 tackles and four and a half tackles for a loss the previous year there.

As a result, his commitment to UT in early May was a huge deal. However, at 6’1″ 226 pounds Mitchell battled injuries all year, officially being declared out for the season by October. He did play the first four games and had his best game against the Pittsburgh Panthers, coming away with seven tackles and a pass breakup.

It was tough to put Mitchell ahead of Mohan given the fact that Mohan played all year, but Mitchell’s start was more valuable. He finished the season with eight tackles and a pass breakup, and even with Jeremy Banks, Solon Page III and Aaron Beasley emerging, he’ll be a starting candidate again next year.
