Tennessee football: Ranking transfers by performance in 2021
Previous school: Alabama Crimson Tide
In the. middle of the summer, Josh Heupel and Tim Banks pulled off a coup by getting Brandon Turnage to transfer to Tennessee football. Theo Jackson had the nickel spot locked up for 2021, and Alontae Taylor led a deep group of cornerbacks, but at 6’1″ 186 pounds, Turnage was definitely one of the cornerbacks of the future.
Well, Turnage ended up making an impact earlier than anybody thought. He saw spot action through three of the first five games of the season, but against the South Carolina Gamecocks, an injury to Jackson forced him into the starting lineup.
All Turnage did in that game was rack up 14 tackles and two tackles for a loss. He ended up earning SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. If that’s what he could do with just one start, imagine how good he could be next year when he’s the feature guy.
After playing just one game in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 2020, Turnage finished 2021 with 22 tackles, 12 of which were solo. He didn’t see much action outside of that one start, but he showed enough to make us all believe in him as a potential star next year, and being that valuable of a starter for a game counts for something.
