Tennessee football: Ranking transfers by performance in 2021
Previous school: USC Trojans
While Da’Jon Terry brought depth for the future to Tennessee football’s defensive line, Josh Heupel needed immediate depth and experience as well. Oh, he also needed versatility given the fact that Tim Banks was moving them back to a 4-3 base with a focus on nickel packages. A 6’5″ 280-pound defensive tackle was the perfect fit.
Caleb Tremblay was in the USC Trojans’ rotation in 2019 but was hurt and only played two games in 2020. Initially a junior college prospect out of American River Community College, he was added to help with the rotation for just this one year. Again, his commitment came after spring practice, but it did happen in April.
For the year, Tremblay played all 13 games and had two starts. He finished with four and a half tackles for a loss, one and a half sacks and 18 total tackles six of which were solo. Although Terry had better tackling stats, Tremblay was more versatile and had more tackles for a loss.
As a result, ever so slightly, Tremblay gets the nod over Terry, the same way Kamal Hadden barely gets the nod over Brandon Turnage and Juwan Mitchell barely gets the nod over William Mohan. However, Tremblay is out of eligibility, so he won’t be back next year. He helped UT tremendously in setting a tone Heupel’s first year, though.
