Tennessee football: Ranking transfers by performance in 2021
Previous school: USC Trojans
Yes, we’re sticking with USC Trojans transfers here. Chase McGrath and Caleb Tremblay both joined Tennessee football a year after Velus Jones Jr. transferred to the Vols, and all three guys proved to be extremely valuable Josh Heupel’s first year on the job.
One of Heupel’s first commits, McGrath joined Tennessee football in February. He was an All Pac-12 kicker in 2019, but he then lost his starting job to freshman phenom Parker Lewis in 2020. As a result, with two years of eligibility left, he decided to transfer, and given the fact that the Vols lost Brent Cimaglia to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, they were the perfect place.
At 6’0″ 195 pounds, McGrath did all you can ask from a college kicker. He didn’t miss an extra point all season, and he was 12-of-16 on field goals. However, he missed no kicks within 30 yards and was 9-of-10 on field goals within 40 yards. Add in going 3-of-5 on field goals 40 to 49 yards, and McGrath is reliable with a leg that can make impressive kicks.
Taking all that into account, Rocky Top has a solid advantage with McGrath. He was a good kicker all season and deserves to be this high on the list. With another year of eligibility, assuming he takes it, they should have this locked up again next year.
