Tennessee football: Ranking every win of 2021 season
Rank: 4
Yes, the win over the South Alabama Jaguars the week before the Vanderbilt Commodores was more exciting for Tennessee football this year. The Vols were coming off a frustrating but expected blowout loss to the Georgia Bulldogs, and they now were 5-5 with bowl eligibility on the line. A win here would put them in.
They wasted no time putting on a show for fans. After forcing a punt on the opening drive, the Vols then scored after an 11-play drive. That set the tone, as they actually scored a touchdown every time they had the ball in the first half. Down 28-0, South Alabama did score to cut it to 28-7, but Velus Jones Jr. then ran a kickoff back for a score to make it 35-7 at halftime.
The onslaught continued in the second half, as Tennessee football then scored on their first three possessions then, so they scored a touchdown on their first eight possessions of the game. Then they hit the 60-point mark with two safeties in the fourth quarter.
Hendon Hooker had 294 total yards, Jones and Cedric Tillman both had 100 yards receiving, Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright and Len’Neth Whitehead combined for 216 yards and four touchdowns and Princeton Fant had 40 yards and a touchdown. All the weapons stepped up, and the defense was dominant in this one as well.
