Tennessee vs Texas A&M Prediction
The Volunteers have bounced back well after a blowout loss to Kentucky a couple weeks ago. Their defense held three of their next four opponents to 60 points or fewer en route to a 3-1 record against the spread (ATS). A perfect 11-0 overall at home, they’ll be put to the test against an Aggies team that feels on the verge of a big upset.
Before a stinker against South Carolina their last time out, Texas A&M nearly beat LSU, Arkansas and Kentucky, losing in the final minutes in all three. They’ve covered the spread in five of their last six games as underdogs behind a swarming defense that forces turnovers on 24.8% of their opponents’ possessions (#10 nationally).
A&M also excels at creating extra points with the 34th-best offensive rebounding percentage and a top-100 offensive free throw rate. Against a Vols team that struggles to protect the ball and ranks 145th in defensive free throw rate, this should allow the Aggies to hang around and possibly steal the game.
Tennessee’s shooters have the tendency to go cold. Ranked just 148th in effective field goal percentage and 199th in 3-point shooting, they could come out flat after such a furious comeback fell short against Texas. And with just the 285th-best offensive free throw rate, they don’t create the kinds of extra points that A&M will.
The Aggies have been knocking on the door of a major upset and I think it could come here. At the least, 11 points is way too large of a spread. I’m taking Texas A&M +11 (-110) as my best bet and will also be placing a smaller bet on their moneyline odds of +470. Tennessee probably isn’t going undefeated at home, and this is a good a spot as any for their first loss.
