1. Kody Jones

Defensive back; Germantown, Tenn.

Obviously, elite prospects from within the state of Tennessee are going to top this list, and Kody Jones fits that perfectly. Once again, he is a defensive back, but he’s the one guy Tennessee football should target above all others.

A four-star across the board, Jones stands between 5’10” and 6’0″ and weighs in the range of 170 to 180 pounds. He has been in Shelby County his whole high school career, initially playing at Fairley High School in the Whitehaven, Westwood and South Memphis neighborhoods in the city before moving out east to play at Germantown High School.

Jones’ range of positions is a lot wider for a defensive back, as he’s listed as a safety on Rivals but a cornerback on On3. He’s actually listed as an athlete on 247Sports and ESPN, so he could play a lot of different roles in the secondary.

That’s a huge deal for the Vols, who just lost Theo Jackson and Alontae Taylor and will lose both safeties by 2024, at least one by 2023. Taking all that into account, a guy like Jones could be a major pickup for Heupel’s team, and given the issues in the secondary during the Music City Bowl, he’d give that unit a spike.

Jim Harbaugh’s departure opens up a world of opportunities for Tennessee football, just as Jeremy Pruitt’s firing closed so many doors for them last year. Heupel and the Vols have to play this right, but if they do, they could benefit, and an in-state guy like Jones should be at the top of their list.
