There are a couple of mild exceptions here. Jenkins is a hybrid strongside defensive end on Rivals but a defensive lineman everywhere else. That’s because he is similar to Caleb Tremblay, who just left and could play anywhere up front.

James Pearce is listed as a defensive end on ESPN, where Joshua Josephs is listed as an outside linebacker. Both are weakside defensive ends on Rivals, so 247Sports and On3 got them right by labeling them edge rushers. Kalib Perry is listed as an athlete on ESPN but a linebacker everywhere else, so that’s where he belongs.

When you look at this class, Heupel addressed all of Tennessee football’s immediate needs. The Vols lost very few starters on the year, but their biggest losses were on the defensive line and in the secondary. They also lost an offensive lineman and two key receivers.

How did Heupel offset that? Well, defensive back, defensive line, offensive line and wide receiver are the only four spots with three or more commitments. It’s worth noting that he also addressed the quarterback need for the future, he added two running backs after two transferred out, and linebacker lost nobody but has issues, so he added two players there.
