9: Tight end: F

Not having any commitment at a position requires it to be a failing grade, and Tennessee football suffered that at tight ends just as they did with special teams. However, relative to future needs, Josh Heupel doesn’t have to worry as much about a failing grade here.

When it comes to depth in 2022, both Princeton Fant and Jacob Warren are returning. As a result, no commitment would see the field anyway. More importantly, the Vols have some depth beyond those two to set themselves up at the position long-term.

Miles Campbell was a highly touted freshman last year, and Josh Heupel made a brilliant move to switch Julian Nixon from wide receiver to tight end at the start of the year. Those two guys are the future for the Vols at tight end after Fant and Warren and alleviate the immediate need for Heupel to add talent at the position.

However, there is a need overall, as those will be the only two scholarship tight ends on the roster in 2023 after Trinity Bell entered the transfer portal. Taking that into account, Heupel didn’t address tight end depth long-term, and while four-star Ethan Davis is currently committed for 2023, that can’t be taken into account here.
