Another transfer to the Oklahoma Sooners, Key Lawrence left Tennessee football and went to OU two days after Eric Gray did. Given the timing of the entries, you have to wonder if other factors were at play, as his transfer lined up with Gray’s transfer, and we know Gray was implicated in the investigation that hung over UT’s head.

On the other hand, Lawrence would have been stuck behind Trevon Flowers and Jaylen McCollough last year and this upcoming year. Playing all 10 games as a reserve behind them in 2020 showed he was ready to start elsewhere.

Well, Lawrence went to OU with four years of eligibility left, and in his first year, he became the starting strong safety. Appearing in all 12 games, Lawrence did a little bit of everything as a defensive back, proving his physical nature with those three forced fumbles, three and a half tackles for a loss and one sack.

Because of his play, Lawrence was able to earn All Big 12 Honorable Mention. Going forward, he seems like the best player UT had that Oklahoma picked up via the portal, and with Flowers certain to be gone after this year while McCollough could be gone, he’s a guy they could have used to get ready for next year.
