John Mincey signed with Tennessee football in Jeremy Pruitt’s first recruiting class and even committed after Butch Jones was fired. However, the Vols were loaded on the defensive line, even with their switch to a nickel-based 4-3 defense, and when it became clear Josh Heupel was looking to add to that depth last year, Mincey was obviously going to be left out.

As a result, Mincey hit the portal before spring ball began and went to the school in its first year under the head coach the Vols fired. Yes, Mincey became a defensive lineman with the Arkansas State Red Wolves under Jones, and quite honestly, it worked out.

In seven games with Arkansas State, Mincey eventually worked his way into a starting defensive tackle role. Racking up as many tackles for a loss as he did and total and solo tackles in that role was impressive, and it was a huge jump from what he did in any of the three years he played as a reserve edge rusher for Pruitt.

Now, with a year of eligibility remaining, Mincey could become a breakout star next year. Jones will definitely rely on him to turn things around after a 2-10 first season, and with his experience playing the sport in general and playing in the SEC, he should help.
