The Volunteers have been waiting for this one since the final horn sounded exactly one month ago today when Kentucky unleashed a 107-79 beatdown on Tennessee. Their offense has found a groove and they’re much better equipped to take down the Wildcats than they were a month ago.
Kentucky, meanwhile, has just keep rolling. They’re 10-1 in their last 11 games with their only loss coming to then-#1 Auburn, but they have struggled a bit against the spread, going just 3-5 ATS in their last eight. With the nation’s fifth-highest adjusted offensive efficiency and 17th-best defensive efficiency, they’re a well-balanced, elite team.
Tennessee will need their best effort to down these Wildcats. With the 10th-best defensive efficiency and sixth-highest defensive turnover rate in the country, they’re a swarming defense that will need to cause havoc to give themselves a chance. Kentucky shot 11/18 from beyond the arc and 20/21 from the free throw line in the first contest, so the Volunteers will have to prevent open looks and fouls in this one.
With a perfect 13-0 record at home, Tennessee has been a menace in Knoxville. But they haven’t faced a monster of this caliber yet. It’s telling that the Volunteers shot 53.4% from the field and 47.8% from three-point land last month and still lost by 32. I don’t think they should be favored even at home, as Kentucky presents too many matchup problems.
