Tennessee football: Ranking all 28 offseason coaching changes by impact on Vols
Previous role: Head coach, Oregon Ducks
We’re at our second coach who has moved from one Power Five program to another. Depending on how elite of a coach Mario Cristobal is, his move to the Miami Hurricanes could have a huge impact on Tennessee football for a few reasons, despite the fact the neither the Oregon Ducks nor The U are in the SEC.
For starters, and we’ll address this with Oregon’s replacement hire later on in this list, Oregon won’t be the only school among the two running an offense conducive to players that UT’s offense is also conducive to. With Cristobal in Miami, now that’s an extra team running a variation of the spread Josh Heupel will have to compete with while recruiting.
Then there’s the fact that Miami is in SEC country, which always naturally counts for more. Finally, Heupel has a few deeper Florida connections than most SEC coaches not in that state would given his three years as head coach of the UCF Knights.
After three straight division titles in the Pac-12 that involved two conference championships, Cristobal is a legitimate threat back at his alma mater and in his hometown. However, his success could also hurt a UT rival, the Florida Gators, as it waters down in-state talent there. That’s another way he can affect the Vols.
