Tennessee football: Ranking all 28 offseason coaching changes by impact on Vols
Previous role: Head coach, Nevada Wolf Pack
There is a small connection to Tennessee football here. Jay Norvell replaces Steve Addazio, who was the Florida Gators’ offensive coordinator Urban Meyer’s final two years on the job there. He then spent two years with the Temple Owls and another seven with the Boston College Eagles before being fired.
That firing is what led Addazio to take over the Colorado State Rams. However, after going 1-3 in 2020 and 3-9 in 2021, he was fired from that job as well. Enter Jay Norvell, who was head coach of the Nevada Wolf Pack from 2017 to 2021 and went 33-26 over those five years.
Norvell has no connection to the Vols whatsoever, he’s going from a Group of Five job to another Group of Five job, and he’s out west. There’s no reason to believe anything about this hiring will have any impact on Rocky Top at all.
The only thing that puts this slightly above the UConn hire is the fact that CSU and Nevada are more relevant than UConn. Also, in tiebreaking fashion, we’ll look at where coaches were sent afterward. Addazio is now the Texas A&M Aggies’ offensive line coach, so him joining the SEC does impact the Vols slightly.
