Tennessee football: Ranking all 28 offseason coaching changes by impact on Vols
Previous role: Interim head coach, TCU Horned Frogs
Again, this is a hire away from a Power Five program. In this case, the hire involves somebody who was a head coach at the previous Power Five program, and although it didn’t impact his leaving, him not staying on that Power Five program’s staff had an impact.
Jerry Kill is a veteran head coach who spent eight years in FCS play before taking over the Northern Illinois Huskies in 2008. After three years there, he had his most notable run with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, where he coached from 2011 to 2015. However, midway through 2015, he had to retire due to health issues.
In 2017, Kill returned to the sport as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights offensive coordinator. Two years later, he became an assistant on the Virginia Tech Hokies. Then he became an assistant on Gary Patterson’s staff in 2020. Patterson resigned midseason in 2021, and Kill took over, going 2-2 those final two games.
It looks like Kill is in decent enough shape to take over full-time head coaching again, and which led him to New Mexico State. Doug Martin’s contract was not renewed there after nine season, where he went 25-74 and had just one winning record, going 7-6 in 2016.
