2245. Scouting Report. player. 20. Pick Analysis. Akron Zips. Tom Arth. Joe Moorhead

Previous role: Offensive coordinator, Oregon Ducks

A second Oregon coordinator is on this list. In 2019, Tennessee football beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs during Joe Moorhead’s second year as head coach there. His reputation was built based on what he did as offensive coordinator of the Penn State Nittany Lions. However, going 6-7 that season led to his firing, and MSU went right out and got Mike Leach.

Moorhead landed on his feet with the Oregon Ducks, though, where he spent the past two years as offensive coordinator. With Oregon undergoing its own coaching change, though, Moorhead was going to be on the move again, and he landed another head coaching job.

Now, Moorhead is in the MAC, coaching the Akron Zips. He replaces Tom Arth, who went 3-24 there and was fired midway through this past season. Oscar Rodriguez finished coaching the last three games there, as the team in general went 2-10.

Leaving a Power Five job, even out in Oregon, is naturally going to have an effect on Tennessee football. However, Moorhead heading to Ohio, which is closely connected to the northern SEC schools like the Vols and Kentucky Wildcats, is enough for us to say that his hire has a greater impact than even the other three so far named in similar situations on this list.
