Pick Analysis. Running backs coach. 3. player. Scouting Report. Florida State Seminoles. David Johnson. 804

Years at current position: 2

It may be a bit questionable to bring a guy back from Jeremy Pruitt’s staff given what happened, but David Johnson left before it all blew up, and all signs pointed to him and Pruitt not getting along. As a result, he’d probably be fine coming back to Tennessee football with Josh Heupel on staff, and he probably doesn’t have any baggage.

Mike Norvell’s tenure with the Florida State Seminoles is in question, which could lead Johnson to look elsewhere. He was UT’s receivers coach in 2018 and before that served as the Memphis Tigers’ passing game coordinator and receivers coach in 2016 and 2017. From 2012 to 2015, he was the running backs and tight ends coach for the Tulane Green Wave.

Johnson is experienced in offensive schemes like what Josh Heupel runs, and as the recruiting coordinator this past year, he will help deepen the Vols’ Florida ties. Add in his connections to West Tennessee to help UT shut down the state along with his connections to Louisiana, and he brings a bonus to the role combined with addressing some key areas.

Although there are plenty of options to strengthen Tennessee football’s ties to Florida on this list, Johnson is the only one who directly strengthens their ties to North Florida and the panhandle area. That’s a huge bonus and another reason the Vols should look at him.
