Jerry Mack. 2. Scouting Report. Tennessee Volunteers. Running backs coach. player. 839. Pick Analysis

Years at current position: 1

David Johnson, Montario Hardesty, Anthony Tucker and Trooper Taylor all have experience coaching running backs in addition to wide receivers. As a result, Josh Heupel could bring any of them on to coach that position, and they’d bring the same advantages to Tennessee football they’d bring coaching receivers.

Should that happen, he can then move Jerry Mack over to receivers coach. As the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Rice Owls the three years before he joined UT< Mack is clearly experienced in the passing game. Before serving as the North Carolina Central Eagles head coach, he was the receivers coach for the Memphis Tigers and South Alabama Jaguars.

Few people are more qualified to coach receivers than Mack, and moving him over could give Heupel more flexibility with guys he wants to hire. Not only are the four we named people who could coach running backs, but he could also bring in other new guys.

Matt Merritt, for instance, is the Georgia Southern Eagles’ running backs coach. He could take over running backs while Mack moves over to receivers. J.J. Finley is an experienced tight ends coach, a position he held under Heupel with the Missouri Tigers in 2016 and 2017. Heupel could hire him, move Alex Golesh over to coach running backs and Mack to receivers.
