Tennessee football: Ranking 15 options to replace Kodi Burns as Vols WR coach
Years at current position: 1
If Josh Heupel is going to promote an assistant in an off-field role for Tennessee football, it makes more sense to promote a guy who has spent a few years with him. Mitch Militello began working under Heupel in 2016 when he became offensive coordinator of Missouri. Militello joined him as a student assistant, a role he served both years there under Heupel.
Then, when Heupel took over as head coach of the UCF Knights, Mlitello followed him and spent three years as an offensive graduate assistant under him. This past year, he worked as an offensive analyst, just as Kelsey Pope did. As a result, he’s deeply familiar with Heupel’s schemes.
Although he has mostly worked with quarterbacks, Militello’s experience is with the passing game in general. Now, he didn’t coach receivers, which keeps him down here along with his lack of experience and does produce a case to actually put Pope ahead of him.
However, Heupel has to see something in Militello if he keeps bringing the guy with him to his different stops. Now, with continuity as a Tennessee football staff member and a solid amount of experience working under Heupel, promoting him could be a major splash.
