After winning a rubber match against the Alabama Crimson Tide and thanks to a major upset, Tennessee Lady Vols enter the SEC Tournament semifinals with a great chance of making the championship game. As the No. 3 seed, they’ll have to face a former Lady Vol to get there.

Kellie Harper’s team, ranked No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the Coaches Poll, will face the Kentucky Wildcats. Led by Kyra Elzy, who played at UT from 1996 to 2001, Kentucky entered the event as the No. 6 seed but shocked the No. 2 seed LSU Tigers 78-63 Friday.

Kentucky actually enters this game on an eight-game winning streak. They beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs 83-67 to open up the SEC Tournament. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ crucial Saturday night matchup.

This is not the same Kentucky team Rocky Top faced earlier in the year. It’s also not the same UT team. That matchup occurred way back on Thursday, Jan. 16. The Lady Vols won 84-58, but it was one of the just six games they played this year while at full strength.

Since then, Harper has lost Keyen Green and Jordan Horston to injury. Kentucky, meanwhile, was in the midst of a skid in which it was losing eight of nine. The current winning streak they are on immediately followed that skid, so it’s hard to read anything into that matchup.

Elzy took over as the interim coach at the beginning of the year after Matthew Mitchell, who had been the program’s head coach since 2007, retired due to health reasons. However, her interim tag was removed nine games into the season. Things were up and down after that, but it’s pretty clear that they are playing well now.

As a result, the Tennessee Lady Vols may actually be the underdogs in this one. Winning, though, would almost guarantee them hosting the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Whichever team wins this game will face the winner between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Ole Miss Rebels for the SEC Tournament Championship Sunday.
