Potential Sweet 16 matchups

No. 1 seed Louisville Cardinals (25-4)

Jeff Walz was somebody talked about to replace Holly Warlick as the Tennessee Lady Vols’ head coach back in 2019. He’s an elite leader, and in 15 years, he has built the Louisville Cardinals into a powerhouse. If UT can get past the first weekend, they’ll in all likelihood face the Louisville Cardinals, a brutal matchup. However, it’d be a huge opportunity if they get hot.

No. 8 seed Nebraska Cornhuskers (24-8)

Obviously, the dream for Rocky Top is for Louisville to somehow be upset before the Sweet 16 arrives. If that were to happen, the Nebraska Cornhuskers would obviously provide the best chance. They are in their second NCAA Tournament under fifth-year head coach Amy Williams, and they are a dangerous scoring team, which provides some hope, but it’s not likely.

No. 9 seed Gonzaga Bulldogs (26-6)

Of course, if Nebraska can’t upset Louisville, maybe the Gonzaga Bulldogs could then upset Nebraska to upset Louisville. However, Lisa Fortier’s program always seems to win league championships but can never get out of the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. They haven’t done it since 2015, her first season. As a result, once again, it’s not likely.

No. 16 seed Albany Great Danes (23-9)

Simply put, any team outside of Louisville is an ideal matchup for the Tennessee Lady Vols in the Sweet 16. Obviously, the Albany Great Danes almost certainly won’t beat that team. No. 16 seeds almost never reach the second round, let alone the Sweet 16. They are in their first NCAA Tournament under fourth-year head coach Colleen Mullen, but that’s likely as far as they’ll go.
