Tennessee Lady Vols’ road to Final Four in the 2022 NCAA Tournament
Potential Elite Eight matchups Part I
No. 2 seed Baylor Bears (27-6)
Kim Mulkey leaving for the LSU Tigers didn’t hurt the Baylor Bears. They still won the Big 12 regular season title under Nicki Collen. If UT can somehow reach the Elite Eight, this is who they’d face. Pat Summitt’s last game ever was an Elite Eight loss to Baylor a decade ago. Could the Tennessee Lady Vols finally avenge that? They somehow have to get there first.
No. 3 seed Michigan Wolverines (22-6)
As sweet as avenging Summitt would be for Rocky Top, they would probably much rather face an easier foe. A year removed from the Sweet 16, Kim Barnes Arico may have her best Michigan Wolverines team ever. They upset UT in the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, so the Lady Vols can avenge that too. However, both teams have to pull upsets to face each other.
No. 6 seed BYU Cougars (26-3)
While the Gonzaga Bulldogs won the West Coast Conference tournament, Jeff Judkins led the BYU Cougars to the WCC regular season title. They are likely more dangerous. If they were to make the Elite Eight, they’d have to upset Michigan on the road and then likely Baylor to get there, but that may not be what UT wants, as they are a dangerous team.
No. 7 seed Ole Miss Rebels (23-8)
Hey, the Ole Miss Rebels have a Cinderella history. Remember 2007? They were a No. 7 seed and knocked off the No. 2 seed and defending national champion Maryland Terrapins. Now they’re in their first tourney under fourth year head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. Could they upset Baylor Bears this year? The Tennessee Lady Vols, who beat them 70-58, would appreciate it.
