March Madness: Five opposing players to watch for Tennessee Vols’ first weekend of 2022 NCAA Tournament
3. DeShaun Wade – Longwood Lancers
Guard; Senior; 6’2″ 200 pounds
Back to Longwood, two guys from there have to be on this list since the Vols are guaranteed to play them in their first March Madness game. Although Isaiah Wilkins was about a combination of matchup and shooting, the reality is that matchups won’t favor Longwood at all in this game. There is no area where you can find an advantage.
As a result, the only real concern is how hot they get from three. DeShaun Wade is more deadly from three than Wilkins. He shoots an incredible 44.4 percent from the three-point line, making just under two and a half a game. That’s good for an average of 11.9 points per game, good for third on the team.
Wade is easily this team’s best chance to upset the Vols on Thursday, and he’ll likely need to be more aggressive than he’s been all year. There are 11 games where he made at least three three-pointers and shot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc.
A game like that from him where he’s even more aggressive would make this team extremely dangerous. If they get hot, Wade will have sparked them. He and Santiago Vescovi will be matched up, and Vescovi only has an inch on him, so watch out.
