It’s still rough to be a Tennessee Vols fan given what happened to the men’s basketball program this past weekend. However, things seem to be going pretty well in the other major sports, and most of them managed to make news Monday.

One of them was football picking up a five-star quarterback Nico Iamaleava right at the onset of spring practice. Our morning update on Rocky Top, though, leads with continuing coverage of women’s basketball scoring a thrilling March Madness victory Monday.

Baseball also made news in terms of an individual recognition and a preview for another game tonight. We’ll close things out with a men’s golf signing that was announced. Let’s start with the basketball team that actually is advancing in the NCAA Tournament.

Kellie Harper, players talk Belmont win – Maria M. Cornelius, GoVols247

After choking away a 14-point lead, the No. 4 seed Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team survived the No. 12 seed Belmont Bruins with a 70-67 win and advance to their first Sweet 16 since 2016. Kellie Harper, Sara Puckett and Tamari Key all spoke after the game. Harper talked about advancing amidst all the injuries. Here’s a bit of what she said.

"“When you really have to fight for something, when it doesn’t come easy, it makes it more special. It does, and they have fought. They have gone through adversity. They’ve hung together. They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do. I wanted so bad for them to get rewarded with more basketball.”"

Key talked about surpassing Candace Parker as the school’s all-time leader in blocks. This is what she said it meant to her.

"“It’s surreal, I think, because Candace Parker is just so amazing, as a human being and basketball player as well, obviously. So, to be able to do that and get it this season in this game, it makes it a lot more special.”"

Puckett talked about her go-ahead three with 20-seconds left to put UT up 67-66. Here’s how she described what happened.

"“I was open and the ball was coming to me. I knew I was going to knock down the shot. I knew everybody on the bench and everybody on that court had every ounce of confidence in me.”"

Freshman pitcher recognized by SEC – SECSports

For the third time this year, the Tennessee Vols baseball team had an SEC Freshman of the week. Drew Beam was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week with Carter Holton of the Vanderbilt Commodores. Jared Dickey has already won the honor twice.

"Tennessee’s Drew Beam pitched a career-high 7.2 shutout innings while allowing just one hit in the Vols’ win over South Carolina on Sunday. Beam took a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing a leadoff double."

Baseball to face Butler – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

On the heels of sweeping the South Carolina Gamecocks to improve to 19-1 and reach the top five of every poll, the Tennessee Vols baseball team has a midweek matchup Tuesday with the Butler Bulldogs. Butler comes in with a 9-10 record.

"First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. EDT. The game will be streamed on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app."

Golf announces new signing – UTSports

Josh Hill is officially the fourth member of the Tennessee Vols men’s golf program’s 2022 signing class. Brennan Webb announced the signing Monday.

"A native of Dubai, Hill is currently ranked the No. 68 amateur golfer in the world by World Amateur Golf Ranking. He is the third-highest ranked player under 18 years old."
