Why does this matter? Tennessee football is set at quarterback with Hendon Hooker as the starter. Well, Joe Milton III, Navy Shuler and Tayven Jackson are all competing for the second-string job. Of those guys, Milton is the only one who will be entering his last year of eligibility in 2023, so this is his best chance to be in line to take over for Hooker that year after he’s gone.

That competition will already be fierce, as five-star 2023 commitment Nico Iamaleava will also join the fold. Jackson and Shuler can afford to be behind guys and either wait their turn or have time to transfer to the right spot. Milton, though, will be on his last chance.

There’s reason to believe he still has a future. Remember, he was the one quarterback Josh Heupel specifically signed after transferring from the Michigan Wolverines last year, and he did earn the starting job. Heupel also recruited the Palm Beach County kid out of Olympia High School in Pahokee, Fla., when he was the Missouri Tigers’ offensive coordinator.

Add in the connection that both have to the state of Florida, and nobody can debate that Milton will get a fair look from Heupel. He was treated too fairly last year. To get that look again, though, he’s got to ball out in the spring.
