Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols’ spring roster for 2022

4. Numerous dramatic weight changes

This past offseason saw 18 Tennessee football players change their weight by at least five pounds or more. While seven of them lost weight, 11 of them gained weight. That’s actually a bit of a surprise given how Josh Heupel’s tempo-based schemes would seem to be more conducive to losing weight and maintaining endurance.

In fact, five players gained weight by double digits. Seven players overall had weight changes by double digits. Most notable among these changes was offensive lineman Kingston Harris. The senior guard put on 14 pounds to get up to 340 overall, a huge benefit to him as he saw more action last year.

James Robinson gained 10 to reach 350 pounds, Juwan Mitchell gained nine to reach 235 pounds, and Bryson Eason also gained 10 to reach 300 pounds despite still being listed as a linebacker. Julian Nixon lost 10 to reach 235 pounds at tight end.

Looking at key players, Byron Young gained 10 pounds to reach 245, Darnell Wright gained 10 to reach 345, and Elijah Simmons lost 10 to hit 340. Jabari Small actually gained seven pounds to reach 213. These are the most significant weight changes in terms of volume and importance to the team.
