Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols’ spring roster for 2022
1. Two notable absences
With no explanation, Tennessee football is without two potentially high-profile players. One is a senior who could have taken advantage of that extra year of eligibility but appears to have not done so, and another is more shocking, as he is an underclassmen who came with a lot of hype.
Aubrey Solomon is the senior. Once a transfer from the Michigan Wolverines, he was a key rotational player on the defensive line for the Vols in 2019. However, last year, partially due to injuries, he was buried in the depth chart. Still, with Matthew Butler, Caleb Tremblay and Ja’Quain Blakely gone, he had a chance to see more action this year.
Defensive back Tyus Fields, who would have been a redshirt junior with still three years of eligibility left, was the other absence. Fields was a four-star cornerback across the board in 2019, and although he hardly played the past three years, you’d think the openings at cornerback would entice him to stay on the roster.
It’s hard to know exactly what led these guys to leave, but Tennessee football will have to go without them. The Vols lost some key talent at both positions, though, so they could have used Solomon and Fields. Still, given all the questions, just having these two absences isn’t the worst situation to be in.
