Immediate help at right tackle could be crucial for Tennessee football given the loss of Cade Mays, and Gerald Mincey is the one scholarship transfer to the Vols who is an early enrollee for 2022. Taking that into account, he could be the guy Josh Heupel and Glen Elarbee plug right in at right tackle to become the starter.
A redshirt sophomore, Mincey transferred from the Florida Gators and played 49 snaps in 2021, allowing 0 sacks and committing 0 penalties. Heupel obviously had connections to him, given the fact that he hails from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Broward County, Fla., and the fact that Heupel coached for three years in the state with the UCF Knights.
There will be competition all offseason to find out who can step in at right tackle. If Mincey works out, though, then the Vols can keep him and Dayne Davis in the rotation on that side, and Jeremiah Crawford can then stay on the left side backing up Darnell Wright.
Taking that into account, the coaches are likely to do everything they can to make Mincey work out. He’s a young talent with a ton of potential who brings expectations of emerging into a star, and you don’t go for a transfer like that if you don’t expect immediate impact. As a result, watch out for what he may do.
