As things heat up for Tennessee football on the recruiting trail, Josh Heupel and the Vols are starting to trend for more prospects, particularly in the trenches. Earlier in the week, UT captured the attention of one such prospect out of Alabama. The Vols made the top 10 for 2023 offensive lineman Vysen Lang.

Coming out of Pike Road High School in Montgomery County, Ala., Lang is a four-star on Rivals but a three-star everywhere else. Standing between 6’4″ and 6’5″ and weighing in the range of 315 to 335 pounds, Lang is listed as an offensive tackle across all services but On3, where he is an interior offensive lineman.

Joining Tennessee football on Lang’s list are the Auburn Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, Florida Gators, Vanderbilt Commodores, Arkansas Razorbacks, LSU Tigers, Texas A&M Aggies and Texas Longhorns. He announced the schools Sunday afternoon with a video on Twitter.

Currently, the Vols only have one player committed who is listed as an offensive lineman specifically for 2023, Ayden Bussell. Local lineman Trevor Duncan could play both sides, but he is likely to be more of an edge rusher.

Taking that into account, while Heupel is doing much better early on the trail this year than he did last year, it’s crucial that he shores up the trenches. After all, Jerome Carvin will be gone next year, and it’s likely Darnell Wright and Jeremiah Crawford follow suit.

A versatile guy like Lang who could play on the inside or the outside would be a huge boost to the program and provide much-needed depth next year. There’s still a long road ahead for the Vols to land him, but at least they made this cut.

There are no favorites to land Lang on the Rivals Future Cast, but Auburn is the plurality favorite on the Rivals Fan Future Cast. The 247Sports Crystal Ball has one prediction, and it’s mid-level confidence for Arkansas. On3 has Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida as the top three in that order, so Tennessee football has work to do.
