In his final spring practice press conference, Josh Heupel said Dayne Davis was playing his best football yet. Meanwhile, Florida Gators transfer Gerald Mincey was in the rotation at tackle, and he could see action as well. However, it’s pretty clear that Jeremiah Crawford gained the most for Tennessee football on the offensive line this year.
Four starters on the line are back, but the loss of right tackle Cade Mays is a key one. As a result, a tackle was going to have the most to gain in spring ball. Crawford was the one player in the Vols’ 2021 recruiting class to commit to Heupel himself, as he was a junior college kid out of Kansas.
In his press conference talking about the development up front, offensive line coach Glen Elarbee said Crawford began the spring ahead of where he was last year. He added that Crawford was able to play center a bit, and with Cooper Mays injury prone, that’s a huge boost.
The graduate of Goddard High School in Sedgwick County, Kan., and Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., saw a decent bit of action last year, and he was with the first team offense in the one scrimmage open to the public. Now, the line struggled that day so that’s a knock against him, but lots of other things work in his favor.
