There actually weren’t many standout comments regarding Tyre West throughout spring practice for Tennessee football. That was also a bit surprising since he was one of the Vols’ top recruits as a four-star out of Georgia. With defensive tackle being a huge position of need, West had a chance to make a huge early splash.

Well, the graduate of Tift County High School in Tifton, Ga., managed to stand out in one way to make this list. In the Vols’ one scrimmage open to the public, despite doing most of his damage with a third team, West was the superstar.

Some estimates had West coming away with five sacks, and he was always in the backfield. If you step your game up when you know more people are watching, that has to count for something. West managed to do just that, and while both he and Jordan Phillips received similar praise from the coaches, he stood out under the semi-lights.

Doing that alone makes West one of the winners from spring practice. Will it be enough to carry over into the fall? Only time will tell, but he did what he needed to do early on to make sure he’d get a serious look from the coaches when August arrives.
