When he committed to Tennessee football out of Georgia, Christian Charles figured to be a speedy defensive back who would eventually step up at safety. He showed flashes last year. However, shockingly, while still working at safety, he saw action at cornerback this spring.

The expected battle at cornerback this year centers around lots of guys who were out. Warren Burrell, Brandon Turnage, Kamal Hadden and De’Shawn Rucker all missed spring ball due to injuries, and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets transfer Wesley Walker hadn’t arrived yet. That left junior college transfer Desmond Williams.

However, Charles then moved over to cornerback and got more praise. The gradate of Chestatee High School in Gainesville, Ga., was specifically touted for his growth by Willie Martinez in his press conference. Combine that with him seeing action in multiple spots in the secondary, and it appears as if the coaches are looking for a reason to be able to use him.

Last year, Charles did have a blocked punt, and his world-class speed makes him a great candidate to play cornerback. He still has a lot of competition that will be back for fall camp, but he managed to be a surprise standout in the spring, and given his youth, that’s a big advantage.
