Tennessee football: Ranking Vols by NFL landing spots after 2022 draft
Round 6; Pick 199
In terms of depth, this isn’t the best place for Cade Mays. The Carolina Panthers aren’t set on the offensive line, but the direction they’ve gone in isn’t fully conducive to Mays and what he brings to the table. However, given the type of offensive lineman Mays is, there’s not that much of a difference among all 32 teams in the value he can provide.
Mays specifically brings versatility to the pros. He has played every position in college along with a spread offense and a pro-style offense. Playing for Tennessee football last year under Josh Heupel is the one thing that likely prepared him the most for this role in Carolina.
Matt Rhule runs a tempo-based scheme, similar to the college style, and Mays was able to develop in that role as a tackle. That he is a projected guard at the next level should only make it easier on him, but there’s still a learning curve to a degree.
As a result, similar to Theo Jackson, this isn’t a bad landing spot for Mays. However, compared to other players on this list, it’s near the bottom. That’s really just a testament to how good of situations different players on Rocky Top ended up in after this draft.
