3. Numerous options now exist at wide receiver.

Obviously, one spot is locked up for Tennessee football next year with Cedric Tillman returning. Luckily for the Vols, he’s also their No. 1 receiver. However, they lost No. 2 wideout JaVonta Payton and slot receiver Velus Jones Jr., leaving some major voids to fill. It’s still not clear who will fill those voids, and recent USC Trojans transfer Bru McCoy could fill one of them.

However, multiple options for both voids emerged in spring ball. Jalin Hyatt was the top performer throughout the spring, consistently receiver praise from Heupel for his play, and that’s huge because Heupel is one player who could fill either void. As a result, his emergence gives Heupel and Alex Golesh options.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Calloway had an impressive touchdown run in his open scrimmage and is already a favorite to fill the slot role. Jimmy Holiday, who could also fill the slot role, was touted for his “incredible growth” according to Golesh

True freshmen Marquarius “Squirrel” White and Chas Nimrod, who would fill the slot or wideout roles respectively, also received mentions this spring. There is plenty of speed to fill the slot role, so these shoutouts there are huge. New receivers coach Kelsey Pope specializes in developing wideouts, though, so it’s the perfect combination. Heupel will have many options this fall.
