Over the weekend, the Tennessee Vols athletic program saw one season come to an end and two other regular seasons come to an end. Meanwhile, one postseason is ongoing, and that’s also true for another regular season. All of this makes up the UT coverage to kick off the week.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with something else coming to an end on the baseball diamond. It’s a streak that ended in negative fashion, but the weekend wasn’t a complete waste. There was more success on the softball diamond, and we’ll cover that too.

Beyond those sports, regular season play continued in track and field, and postseason play began in men’s and women’s tennis. We’ll look at how all those programs performed in their scheduled events, but let’s start with the diamond.

Tony Vitello talks series loss to Kentucky – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Thanks to a 3-2 loss in extra innings Thursday, the Tennessee Vols baseball team suffered its first series loss of the year, losing two of three to the Kentucky Wildcats on the road. However, they still clinched the SEC East at 42-6 and 20-4 in league play. Tony Vitello discussed this past weekend’s series. Here’s how he described it.

"“It was one in which Kentucky gave some guys opportunities in situations they hadn’t been in before. And those guys capitalized on them. And then if you were to flip the script and kind of analyze more what our guys did, some of our guys got outside of themselves in who they are. Really just at the plate. I think defensively both teams — and I’m just going off the cuff here — were equal. I thought the pitching was equal, if not us.”"

Men’s tennis reaches Super Regionals – Eric Woods, UT Daily Beacon

Thanks to a sweep of the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles Friday and a 4-1 win over the Duke Blue Devils Saturday, the Tennessee Vols men’s tennis team is advancing to the NCAA Super Regional round of the tournament. UT will take on the Florida State Seminoles Saturday afternoon.

"Freshman Shunsuke Mitsui charged the net for a cross-court volley in the deciding point of the tiebreak, causing an error by the out-stretched Faris Khan. Mitsui stood at the net and roared with the crowd, as he had given No. 6 Tennessee a 4-1 win over No. 21 Duke, sending the Vols to the Super Regional Round of the NCAA Tournament."
