Tennessee football: Ranking position groups by 2022 spring practice play
1. Wide receiver
With the departures of Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton along with the talk that surrounds Josh Heupel’s offensive schemes, Tennessee football’s situation at wide receiver has been the talk of the offseason. However, they showed in the spring that they clearly have tons of options.
Cedric Tillman already has one spot locked up as the returning No. 1 wideout. Lots of candidates could replace Payton at the No. 2 spot or Jones in the slot, but standing out among them is Jalin Hyatt. All spring, Heupel went out of his way to tout Hyatt’s development and the big jump he took, so that’s likely one spot filled.
Meanwhile, freshmen managed to stand out in a big way. Chas Nimrod and Cameron Miller both got shoutouts at wideout. Marquarius “Squirrel” White was touted for his play, and he could be a speedy slot guy. Returning receiver Jimmy Calloway had an impressive touchdown run in the open scrimmage. Jimmy Holiday at least got looks in the return game, as his speed is valued.
Simply put, tons of guys here got shoutouts, and that doesn’t even include the arrival of USC Trojans transfer wideout Bru McCoy, which will happen in the summer. Taking that into account, Tennessee football appears loaded at receiver, and this spring provided the first taste of that.
