8. Tight end

To be fair here, Tennessee football’s tight ends are going to fly under the radar in Josh Heupel’s system unless there’s a generational talent at the position. Princeton Fant and Jacob Warren both took advantage of the COVID eligibility ruling and decided to come back for an extra senior season, so they should be fine at the position when it comes to experience.

However, the issues when it came to blocking in the open scrimmage and throughout spring ball have to be somewhat attributed to the tight end position. That’s still a role they have to play. Otherwise, they’d just be full-time receivers. It goes deeper than that, though.

In that scrimmage, Fant didn’t have any catches, and Warren came away with just two catches. Maybe that had something to do with the flow of the game, but what’s clear is that the unit did nothing to stand out throughout spring ball, which is what puts it down here.

Offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Alex Golesh never really talked about the position during his press conferences, as he focused on the offense as a whole. Not mentioning the one position he coaches in the context of that offense, though, shows that players from there didn’t do anything to stand out.
