Tennessee football: Five Vols who suffered from no spring game

For two years in a row, Dayne Davis has been one of Tennessee football’s standout spring offensive linemen. Once an in-state walk-on out of Sullivan East High School in Bluff City, Tenn., Davis has indeed worked himself into the rotation somewhat. However, this year, he had the chance to provide more than just being a rotational guy.
With Cade Mays gone and questions abound at right tackle, Davis is in competition for a starting job. Once again, Davis received praise for the way he played. However, the offensive line was atrocious in the one open scrimmage, creating tons of questions going forward.
Meanwhile, Davis needs to now prove what he can do in front of a crowd, as constantly being hyped up in practice won’t cut it. Based on his supposed development, he needed a spring crowd to truly show what he’s now able to do as a blocker. The coaches needed to see it too.
Without it, Davis will enter August still firmly in competition with everybody else for that starting role. He drew praise for his play in last year’s spring game. Doing it again with no Mays locked in as the starter would have likely given him a huge leg up when hitting the field again in fall camp.
