Defensive tackle

1. LaTrell Bumphus

Nobody is more in line to replace an elite producer from last year than LaTrell Bumphus replacing Matthew Butler. Like Butler, Bumphus committed to Tennessee football as an end in Bob Shoop’s system under Butch Jones. However, Bumphus moved around a lot more, even seeing time on offense. Still, he went from end to edge rusher to down lineman to defensive tackle on defense.

This year, after battling injuries last year, Bumphus should be ready to go. He had six tackles for a loss and two sacks playing at end in 2019, his last full year healthy, so we know what he could do. With Aubrey Solomon gone, Bumphus should be able to shine here.

2. Kurott Garland

Honestly, the rotation for Tennessee football at defensive tackle this year leans more to the pure interior linemen, and Kurott Garland fills that void. It comes down to him and Tyre West here, but Garland’s experience is what will make him the second-string defensive tackle.

Last year, in a new system, Garland had two tackles for a loss and 16 overall tackles, nine of which were solo. He’ll back up Butler this year and then start in 2023, his final year of eligibility. Then West will take the reins at this position. Either way, though, tackle is deep this year.
