Free safety

1. Trevon Flowers

Another player who chose to come back for his graduate senior season, Trevon Flowers is a true center fielder at free safety. He is the best at containment among any of Tennessee football’s back defenders, and he also brings with him an elite level of athleticism and experience.

Last year, Flowers had two interceptions and three pass deflections. He had the second highest PFF grade in the secondary. With another year of experience in Tim Banks’ system, Flowers should be elite. This is one of the spots that’s locked up and nobody even has to question, provided Flowers is able to stay healthy again this year.

2. Tamarion McDonald

Moving Tamarion McDonald to safety two years back is working out for Tennessee football. He was one of the players to receive specific shoutouts in the spring, and that’s enough for us to put him on this list as the second-string free safety. Heck, this was a role he played last year.

McDonald did have an interception and a pass deflection last year to go along with nine tackles, eight of which were solo. He appears destined to take Flowers’ job once Flowers is gone after this upcoming year, so there’s really no question that he’ll be Flowers’ backup until then.
