Place kicker

1. Chase McGrath

Nobody will debate this one. Chase McGrath replaced Brent Cimaglia last year after transferring to Tennessee football from USC, and he immediately became a reliable place kicker. For the year, he nailed 12 of 16 field goals and only missed one inside 40 yards while going perfect on extra points.

That’s really all you can ask for at the college level. On field goals 40 to 49 yards, McGrath went 3-of-5, and he missed his only attempt of 50 yards or more. However, he made a 48-yarder, and he showed at USC he can hit 50-plus yard field goals, so returning for his super senior season, don’t be surprised if he makes one of those kicks this year.

2. Toby Wilson

After Cimaglia shut the season down in 2020, Toby Wilson became the place kicker for the Vols, so he has experience playing backup here. He only attempted extra points that season, but he did go 7-of-8 on those, so he has shown enough to be serviceable when needed.

Obviously, he’s not going to see any action on field goals for as long as McGrath is healthy, but he has another year of eligibility left after this one, so you could see him with just one year of experience emerging onto the scene. Given the fact that he has another key role, that’s not really a crazy thought.
