Tennessee football: Projecting two-deep depth chart for 2022
Long snapper
1. Matthew Salansky
Two years ago, Will Albright was arguably one of the most highly touted recruits you could be for a long snapper. He was a scholarship player who actually committed to Tennessee football. However, he has since entered the transfer portal because Matthew Salansky has been so good at the position that he wouldn’t lose the job.
Long snapper is a huge role. The Vols have had drop-offs in the past on field goals and punting with the same kickers because of the switch here. Salansky has started every game each of the past two years, and he’s still got three years of eligibility left, so this is one area where consistency should really help the kicking game this year.
2. Alton Stephens
With Albright gone, Josh Heupel had to add depth here. Enter Alton Stephens. A transfer from the Texas State Bobcats last year, Stephens has plenty of experience playing college ball, and he attended Georgia Military College before Texas State.
As a result, Stephens has plenty of experience as a long snapper if Salansky doesn’t work out for some reason. These are the only two long snappers on the roster, so they will obviously be No. 1 and No. 2 on this list, but Salansky is the clear-cut starter across the board.
