Once again, Tennessee football has two in-state players at this position who appear to contribute equally. This time, though, the local Knox County kid was left out of the mix. Senior Jacob Warren out of Farragut High School in Knoxville, Tenn., will be a rotational tight end, particularly in the red zone, but Princeton Fant will get the bulk of the snaps.

Hailing from Nashville, Fant left Davidson County to attend LaVergne High School in Rutherford County, Tenn., which is where Murfreesboro is. He then left that to join UT and has been in the program since 2017 under Butch Jones. During that time, he’s played running back and tight end.

This upcoming year will be the first in his college career that Fant didn’t either change his position or system. Last year, he caught 16 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown. With all the turnover at receiver, he could see a larger role this year, and Josh Heupel’s history shows he’s willing to use elite receiving tight ends when possible.

Warren will be the blocking and red zone receiving tight end. However, between the 20s, Fant will see the action, and he’ll be relied on for potential big plays. As a result, he is the more critical tight end in this system, and he has a chance to end his final year of eligibility with a bang.
