Tennessee football’s top 10 in-state players for 2022
6’3″ 290 pounds
Sticking with defensive linemen, LaTrell Bumphus played last year banged up. However, fiven his size, he’s perfectly positioned to step in and fill the role of Matthew Butler. Like Princeton Fant, Bumphus has been forced to play multiple positions for Tennessee football since committing to the Vols back in 2017.
Initially an edge rusher, Bumphus became a tight end and then a down lineman on the end in Jeremy Pruitt’s 3-4 scheme before finally settling at defensive tackle in Tim Banks’ nickel-heavy 4-3 last year. When fully healthy, he has shown his abilities though. In 2019 as a by-committee edge rusher, he had six tackles for a loss and two sacks.
Although the graduate of Hardin County High School in Savannah, Tenn., only had seven tackles last year, three of which were solo, he was banged up most of the season. His regular season PFF grade was still over 68, though, so he’s got promise fully healthy.
This year, look for Bumphus to burst onto the scene. He should immediately be a fixture on the defensive line, and honestly, there’s a chance he moves much higher up this list. Given what he’s shown over the years, staying healthy is the only question surrounding him.
