Tennessee football: Top 10 Vols from out-of-state on 2022 roster

Before joining Tennessee football, Hendon Hooker was all ACC country, coming out of North Carolina and playing for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He was a graduate transfer to Jeremy Pruitt’s staff and then had to adjust as Josh Heupel took over, particularly when he lost the starting job he deserved to Joe Milton III early on.
Still, the graduate of Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C., took advantage of his shot when it came to him, taking over after Milton got hurt against the Pittsburgh Panthers. He never looked back. Now, the Guilford County native enters this year with tons of expectations.
Hooker completed 206-of-303 passes (68 percent) for 2,945 yards (9.7 yards per attempt), 31 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran the ball 166 times for 616 yards (3.7 yards per attempt) and five touchdowns. Those highly efficient numbers tell a major story.
Now, Hooker enters this year without the help of two of his key receivers from last year, as Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton are gone. However, Tennessee football has added plenty of talent there, Heupel’s system is still in place, and Cedric Tillman is back. That should make for a fun offense to watch once again, and a North Carolina kid will be leading the charge.
