Tennessee football: Top 10 Vols who were or are walk-ons for 2022

Being a returning starter automatically puts you higher on this list than anybody else, and Toby Wilson is among Tennessee football’s returning starters. The graduate of Brentwood Academy in Williamson County, Tenn., took over for Paxton Brooks on kickoff duties in the middle of the second game of the season last year against the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Wilson did well enough in that role to never give it up. He kicked it off 81 times, and 35 of them went for touchbacks. None of his kickoffs went out of bounds, and only 12 spotted opponents the ball past the 25-yard line, one of which was due to a defensive offside penalty. There was one run back for a touchdown, but that wasn’t his fault.
Simply put, Wilson did his job on kickoffs. He has also proven he can be okay on field goals. At the end of 2020, when Brent Cimaglia shut down the season before transferring to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Wilson came in and hit seven of eight extra point attempts.
Although he didn’t attempt a field goal, Wilson at least proved he could back up whomever the place kicker is. That means this year, he could fill in for Chase McGrath if that ever became necessary. As a result, he’s near the top of this list.
